MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter

MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter
  • In the Box - Apple MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter

I wasn't wild about the old T-shape MagSafe connector so I was glad when the whole line went to the L-shape connector a few years ago. Now we're back to a T-shape connector with MagSafe 2. The converter is actually bigger than I expected, and I find that usually when I pull out the power cord, the cord disconnects from the converter rather than the converter disconnecting from the laptop. Just weird and fiddly, but necessary since Apple hasn't updated the Thunderbolt Display to MagSafe 2 yet.

A note on price: Amazon's "suggested retail price" of $29.99 is laughable; it's $9.99 from the Apple Store and has been from day one. It's actually more expensive on Amazon.

///UPDATE: price has changed to $9.99. I still don't understand why it was originally priced at $29.99. But there you have it. Check prices elsewhere before pulling the trigger on any product here. Review stands.///

I'm at a total loss...because Amazon claims the list price is $29.00, and that their price of $13.22 saves you $15.74

But. That's. Just. Wrong.

Directly from Apple, this handy adapter is only $9.99, certainly NOT 3 times that like the $29 Amazon claims.

Just visit Apple's website. Or search Apple's online store for "MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter" or MD504 or MD504ZM/A

This product does work to accomplish what it says it does, and works quite well. I think it's great for those of us whom already had a MacBook Pro and/or Air, and maybe had bought an extra adapter to keep always in one place that you used the machine most, and then one that stayed in the computer case/bag and ready to travel.

My only issue is my disappointment with Amazon, because this "List Price" that they've drawn through to show how much you "save," seems to be totally bogus, and so this naturally makes me wonder if they've have mislead me this way in the past!

Ugh. The situation is both confounding and disappointing.

The Macbook Airs and Pros introduced in June 2012 come with the new MagSafe 2 power adapter. It's identical to the original MagSafe adapter except the plug size is different.

If you have an original MagSafe power adapter that's the correct wattage for your new Macbook, get this tiny adapter and you'll be able to use it.

If you want an extra power adapter for your new Macbook and don't want to pay the full price of a new MagSafe 2 power adapter, you can probably find an original MagSafe power adapter for much less (just make sure it's the correct wattage for your computer), and then use it with this converter.

I've posted a few pictures in the "customer images" section, have a look if you like.

One word of caution: this adapter is so tiny, the size of my thumbnail, it could easily be lost. For now, I'm keeping it in its box in my laptop bag.

Another reviewer said that this adapter won't charge your computer while you're using it. That's not my experience. I have used this adapter many times since getting my 2012 Macbook Air, and it always charges the computer while I'm using it (unless the battery is already fully charged).

At the time I'm writing this, Amazon's price for this converter is higher than the suggested retail price. This is a brand new item, I've emailed Amazon and they will hopefully correct the price. But until then, don't pay more than the suggested retail price.

The magsafe to magsafe2 adapter is only $9.99 at the apple store. Why are they asking more here? I bought the adapter at the Apple store when I picked up my new MBPwRD. If you like any Apple enthusiast, you will be in the store soon anyway.

This does exactly what it is supposed to do. No complaints, The price is good for what it does, beets buying a new $80 charger!
