Good for mounting on shark's heads for subsequent deployment into subterranean evil genius lair/laboratory. Cannot comment on lifespan. Did not include instructions, but, "duh"; if you can't figure it out then you should not be using a laser product of any type. This laser pointer works perfectly as advertised with an appropriate power level for consumer use in the state of California. Bright and clean, no operational problems. Price is FANTASTIC. As a follow-in edit, I would like to comment on another reviewer's concern regarding potential UV burn damage. He was concerned because he could feel the laser's warmth, which is one thing you might feel if you were exposed to high power UV energy. You should be happy to know that this laser diode is actually a 809 nm laser (infrared) that is frequency doubled through clever electronic tricks. The original infrared spot is still there, but you can't see it, and it is the source of your warmth (IR is intrinsically warm, unlike visible and UV light). It is also, not coincidentally, why this type of blue-laser light is so outrageously inexpensive. . . the IR laser diodes are cheap, but blue violets are normally expensive. It's also why it doesn't maintain its spot size at long distances like the $90 versions.

I may sound like an idiot sometimes in my reviews, but I actually have a Ph.D. in applied physics, so I know a thing or two about lazar beems n' stuff.
