I can assure you that what I got is something amazing. As other reviewers said, it doesn't do much in just plain water. But, if you add a few drops of dishwasher soap and warm water....WOW!!!
It cleaned up my wife's diamond ring and earrings so that they looked like we just bought them that day from the jeweler. Maybe even better if that is possible!
I was so addicted to seeing things come out cleaner than I can ever remember that I then threw pretty much anything in the house that would fit into the thing with surprising results every time: Keys, glasses, watches, pocket knives, coins, letter opener, cellphone (just kidding) etc. After I was done with all that, I took it to my family's houses and cleaned everything in their houses that would fit! Unbelievable results again every time. After everyone stopped making fun of me for being a male obsessed with cleaning women's jewelry, I decided to write this ridiculously positive review.
There is NO WAY jewelry can get any cleaner than after a few cycles in this thing with soap and warm water. Don't waste your money on a more expensive unit (as I almost did).
The only thing I can't speak to is reliability. Since I just got the thing a few days ago I am not sure how it will hold up. It feels like good quality but who knows about the electronics. I will update this review if/when the thing stops working. But even if it gives me a year of use its still way cheaper than most the other alternatives that had decent reviews.
So far so AMAZING!
And most importantly:
***DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME USING THIS THING WITHOUT A FEW DROPS OF SOME KIND OF GENTLE DETERGENT OR PRODUCT MADE FOR CLEANING JEWELRY***

This machine has worked great in cleaning up some used jewelry I bought online. I used it with a commercial jewelry cleaner liquid soap, so that might help with effectiveness. I was pretty amazed in how well it cleaned out the tight undergallery of a tanzanite ring the stones were a completely different color (darker and better) than before the cleaning and actually sparkled again. Just one three-minute cycle seems to do the trick but for really gunky undergalleries more cycles are likely needed.I was able to find this cleaner new on Amazon for $18 if there aren't any available at that price now, I recommend waiting to see if that price will be posted again.
I would NOT use this machine with fine pave settings or cheaply crafted prong settings because it knocked out a diamond baguette in one of my other rings (not high quality) on the first cleaning. Fortunately, whatever it knocks out settles to the bottom of the stainless steel compartment. I also would not use it for glued inlays (e.g., some black opal rings).

This cleaner keeps all my jewelry sparkling like new. When you have a very dirty ring it takes a few cycles and even a toothbrush to clean it for the FIRST time. This cleaner will maintain your clean ring. I use it daily and all my rings look like new. It also helps to change the water and clean the cleaner out with a dry towel depending on how much you use it. I clean mine once a month or whenever the water gets dirty. And that is the point, the water is dirty, and therefore the cleaner is working. If you need extra cleaning power put a drop of dish soap in the cleaner. This is an incredible price as well.Want Sonic Wave CD-2800 Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner Discount?
(#1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)(#1 REVIEWER)When this first came out in the Sharper Image catalog I bought one because, even though my jeweler (a friend) sold other models in the store in which he worked, he said I should buy this one. It's been 4 years now of monthly cleanings of my watches, rings, necklaces, silver, gold, eyeglasses and I'm still "wowed"...even more so that the price is now this cheap!!!I'm not real easy on my jewelry. A couple times I did housecleaning when I was wearing a John Hardy silver ring which I love but the bleach or cleaner turned it black (yes, I did this TWICE...having not learned my lesson the first time). The first time I was sure I'd ruined the ring for good until I put it through a cycle in this cleaner and SHAZAM! it took it off. Diamonds are amazing after running them through here.
I'm an artist so I wind up with clay and paint in my stones and jewelry. Hence my need for the best cleaner, even when it was priced crazy when it first came out.
I sometimes add jewelry cleaner to the cleaning machine even though you can use straight water. My jeweler also said you can add a tiny bit of ammonia and dishsoap to water and you'll flat out megashine your diamond rings...he was right.
I have no idea why ultrasonic machines "outshine" (I kmow, bad pun) the other jewelry cleaners but this messy jewelry wearer knows there's a big difference.
Glad to see they are cheap now for when I need to replace mine. I keep waiting for it to die as much as I use it.I bought this product to use it in a non traditional way.
I had just purchased a Blackberry Bold and then about 2 weeks later went on a bike ride, and put my new phone in a pouch with my sunscreen (yes stupid). It rained very badly and when I went to get the phone, it was covered in the sunscreen which had leaked and it was also wet. Having no insurance on the phone, AT&T would not replace the 2 week old phone because it was wet. Furthermore, they wanted $400 to repurchase a new one.
I immediately took out the battery and bought this sonic cleaner. I took apart the phone down to its pieces, then put half distilled water and half rubbing alcohol in the unit. I ran the pieces 12 times each, changing the water/alcohol every two cycles of 3 minutes.
I noticed immediately that every contact which was covered in hardened sunscreen was shiny and looked like new. I allowed the pieces to dry overnight and when I reassembled the phone, it was like factory new!
A new phone would have cost me $400 and the guy at AT&T told me I should throw it away. For $30, I fixed it with a little know how.
After that I of course cleaned all my jewelry and everything else I could put a shine on. Making sure to wash the basin so no more alcohol was there, a little warm water and some dishwashing liquid and every thing sparkled like new after 2 or 3 cycles.
This unit vibrates at 42,000 cycles. Make sure that you get at least this. Read other product descriptions before buying. Some other units at this price level will only vibrate at 7,000 or 13,000 cycles. In addition, these units are very simple...there is no reason to spend more than the cost of this unit on another product that vibrates at the same cycle.
