- The HDMI to VGA Adapter allows for aconnection to VGA monitors and projectors supporting a maxinum resolution.
- Connectting your new NoteBook, Laptop, HD DVD,HD DV without VGA interface to projector, Display, LCD, TV & Monitor in old model with VGA interface only for big screen viewing.
- Plug-in-out, extral Power,Power from HDMI connectting device.
- Convert the HDMI output port on your ENVY or Voodoo laptop to an analog VGA input with the HDMI to VGA Conversion Adapter.
- It supports full-size high-definition resolution of 720p or 1080p.
This device intelligently scales the output signal over VGA, and pretty well, I might add. For example, on my ASUS VW266H 25.5" LCD with a native resolution of 1920x1200, when I output 1366x768 (the native resolution on my laptop panel), the device upscales the signal to 1920x1200 and displays it just fine. Similarly, on my Hannspree HF255HPB, with a native resolution of 1920x1080, when I output the same 1366x768 resolution the device upscales the signal to 1920x1080. With the Hansspree, I see some blurryness at some of the higher resolutions above 720, but that might just be related to the monitor's analog port itself, and not the device. I'm pretty impressed for a ~$15 no-name device!

I bought this to convert a Raspberry Pi (Linux single board computer) video output from HDMI to VGA.When I got it, I first tested it on my Apple MacMini and it seemed to work fine with a VGA monitor; however, with the Pi, it would not drive the display.
In going through postings on the Pi developer's forum, this converter was mentioned several times as overloading the CPU board: HDMI only specs a capability of 50 mA of current @ +5v, which is intended to power an eeprom in the display/adapter that returns configuration information. This converter pulls over 400 mA, which may be why there is no display. In some cases the excess current can burn out the protection circuit on the host board, resulting in a diode that is either open circuit or one that passes current without providing any reverse voltage protection.
Since more expensive converters have separate power supplies, a workaround is to rewire the device with a separate 5V input (for example, from a powered USB connection). Or in the case of the Pi, replace its on-board protection diode with a more robust one and use a larger Pi board power supply.
While this converter works with my MacMini, I am hesitant to recommend it for that application even if it is cheaper than the Apple Thunderbolt/mini-DisplayPort to VGA converter.
(Note that the Thunderbolt interface is spec'd at a more robust 10 Watts so it can support cable-powered converters).
(Another note: you should *not* use the USB ports on the Raspberry Pi to supply power to the converter since they are only good for 100 mA;
a powered USB hub will be able to supply 500mA.
I was able to pop the adapter open at the VGA connector with a guitar pick; I think I see the power and ground connections on the edge of the board, but need to confirm this with the HDMI spec and a meter before doing any re-wiring)
