I got this unit yesterday. Hooked it up and it did not work. I was under the impression I wouldn't need a power supply. Well, i found out that you do indeed need power. So, the unit comes with a usb cord for power, but this is on an old tv, so, I have nothing to plug it in to. To make it work, I had an extra usb power adapter, so I hooked the unit up and the unit worked. I watched several podcast yesterday and today with no problems. This unit is a good option if you are wanting to hook up an apple tv to an older tv. Just make sure you also buy an usb ac power adapter.

this gem worked perfectly to connect my Motorola Droid Razr android phone into an all purpose DVD player, music player, and garmin style guidance system for my 2004 GMC Yukon. My phone's music collection plays through my car stereo system as does any DVD movies that I have saved on my phone. If you use the google maps application, the maps application will interrupt your music or dvd just as if you had a fancy expensive computer system in your car. Extra items I needed to buy to make this happen was (1) a phone charger with a USB plugin, and Motorola OEM Standard HDMI Cable (HDMI type D (about size of micro USB) to regular size HDMI), and (2) a composite AV cable (red, white, yellow). About $50 total. I thought about gogroove wireless solution but was warned about poor quality and possible interference on FM band. Also considered "Isimple Isgm575 iPod/iPhone and Auxiliary Audio Input Interface" with a bestbuy install but didn't do this as it was about 3x as much as this product. Tried this first and am happy as no changes to car were required.

If you are using this device to convert HDMI (from your PS3 or laptop) to composite (for older tv, vehicle monitor, etc), then this device will work for you. Expect video quality to degrade as you are converting a digital high resolution signal to an analog low (640x480) resolution but it will still look OK. The switch for PAL (European analog standard 25fps) or NTSC (US analog standard 30fps) sometimes moves slightly and so I will have to switch back and forth to ensure the switch is on NTSC so that the display can interpret/display the data properly. Also if you are looking for this device to work with a Gumstix computer, it will also work (tried with an Overo FireSTORM) however the gumstix cannot supply the voltage this device needs to power up properly (where a PS# can supply enough power). Thus you will need to plug in the additional USB power cable to an externally powered hub for it to work. The older, bulkier hdmi-rca came with a power adapter so it didn't suffer the usb power issue but it also would not communicate the gumstix's HDMI signal properly to the converter in order to display video on a monitor.

I have an older TV which has no HDMI input. I needed to connect my laptop to the TV for watching Netflix movies. I was hesitant that this little gadget could cure my ills, but it works perfectly. I have it for about 3 weeks and have used it several times. I'm running an HDMI cable from laptop to the gadget. From the gadget to the TV i have 2 audio cables (red and white) and 1 video (yellow). Picture and audio quality is great. Also, with my set up the power cord was not needed. One thing to remember when connecting laptop you need to change the external monitor setting (usually F4).
