The SANS-400 functions perfectly as designed and described. Homeshare is not for the technically challenged, or for people who will not read manuals. You can't have done any research and said "DNLA crap". A Homeshare network is by definition based on DNLA. "Players" have to be DNLA certified. WIN7 is. iTunes is NOT. There are DNLA certified iPhone apps that WILL play your iTunes library...check it out. Plus, WMP will share your iTunes Library.

The speaker works fine with my Sony BluRay wifi stereo system and has good fidelity. However, we can't use it as we wanted to because it has limited range. It will play for a while, then cut out in most places unless it is close to the wifi signal. The stronger your wifi signal, the better it will work for you. It works without software using my ipod connected to the BluRay stereo as a source. However, I have a Macbook, and Sony does not provide Mac software to enable it to stream from my computer. I had to download an outside program, eyeconnect for it work, which is only free for 30 days. I find it lame that Sony does not provide Mac software with the product. I got busy and missed the 30 day return deadline, so I am stuck with it. I would prefer just normal wireless speakers to this contraption.

About a month ago I bought the later model (SANS 410), and have no memory of how long it took to set up, which to me means it was fast and simple. It plays nicely about 30 feet from my router because it is in a room with a booster (router is Apple extreme and booster is Apple express). I am running iTunes 11 on the latest iMac, released November 30, 2012. So far so good -even is controllable from my SAMSUNG phone -who needs an iPhone with its miniature screen? But I digress.

So SONY dropped in my mailbox a link to refurbished equipment on sale, including the SANS 400, which was released at $250 or so, dropped about $50 when the 410 came out, and was now going, refurbished, for $99 w/free shipping. Hey, why not? I've got more room and am ready to buy more Apple expresses as the need arises. Except I can't get this one to play, even a few inches from my router. What makes this a real mystery is the Eyeconnect application (which somebody here has complained about, but it's free so what's the problem?) "sees" this speaker, even revealed its IP address, if that's what you call that number whose digits are separated by periods. Further more, after finally understanding the instructions SONY emailed me (more detailed than the instruction manual that came with the speaker -or at least easier to follow), I got the LINK light to run green, which according to the literature means the speaker is now connected wirelessly.

BUT, my iTunes does not recognize it. I have a report/question into Eyeconnect, after a conversation with a really nice guy who tried to help. (SONY's phone help was courteous, but just led to emailing me the instructions referenced above). In a few days if it doesn't work I have to ship it back to them for a refund. Hope they don't give me any sass about returns -I've had a lot of SONY stuff and I like the company, its products and support.

The Sony SA-NS400 is in a word awful. I traded a $500 item for one plus a Blu-Ray DVD player and am extremely disappointed. From a computer you can only play music via Windows Media Player (who does that?!). I subscribe to Rhapsody, an online music service. Nope! Can't use that without purchasing an additional control unit which costs $400. Plus I have an android based phone and the free app which is supposed to allow you to play music from your phone to the device can't even DETECT the network speaker. If I had purchased this item I would take it back. As it is I am stuck with a piece of crap paperweight. Don't waste your money on Sony products.

I have bought two of these and I'm buying another one. They sound good for the price.

I have a Sony wireless Blue-Ray player I use with it in addition to music played from various computers. I stream Pandora through the Blue-Ray player and these remote speakers work well with that system. Without the Blue-Ray player, I would not be able to stream internet music to these speakers. Music streamed from a computer must be recorded in the computer, not streamed from the internet to the computer.

I didn't have much trouble with set-up except the speakers didn't work well with either of two different AT&T U-Verse routers. Once I switched to another router, I haven't had any trouble.
