The Altec Lansing was the best with great clarity and volume. The iHome iHM60 came in second, with less clarity and fullness. The Music Bullet came in last, with lower volume, uneven sound, and not much base, if any. When you pop the Music Bullet open to expand it, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the sound or base at all.
We did think the Music Bullet was better than a very cheap set of speakers we recently bought, so I don't think it is junk, but it isn't that great for sound quality you can do much better for not much more money. We liked the Music Bullet until we compared it to the others.
There are some good things. The retractable cord is nice on the music bullet. The Music Bullet is small, works well enough for simple uses, and it is cute.
I am returning both the Music Bullet and the iHome iHM60 and keeping the Altec Lansing iM227.
If I had to grade them, here are the grades I'd give them:
Altec Lansing: 10, "Wow, that sounds awesome."
iHome iHM60: 7, "Not bad, pretty loud."
Music Bullet: 5, "Eh. It is okay."
Cheap old speakers: 2, "Please turn those off."
Buy Music Bullet Mini Portable Speaker with Gigantic Sound & Kickin Bass Now
I wanted a small speaker to use with my laptop and cellphone that wasn't expensive and had good sound. There were others that I tried before that had better sound but were more expensive than I was willing to pay for. The music bullet has good clear sound with enough bass to not sound weak. It is not Bose, don't be mistaken, but it is good for the price. However, as another reviewer noted, the bass does not improve when you open the Bullet up.********UPDATE 01/12/2011********
As a result of the price being increased I reduced my review from 4 stars to 2 stars. When I purchased this item it was being sold by Amazon @ $19.99, now this item is sold through Amazon on behalf of another company and the $35 price makes this speaker much less attractive. The $35 price VS the performance of the speaker makes this a poor value. If you can find it for $20, it's worth the money.
**********Update 02/19/2011****
The price is currently below the $20 mark which makes this product a good value. This will be the last update on this review as I feel if you can get it for less than $20 it's a good value and 4 star product.

These speakers have been widely available for over a year now at places like Wal-Mart which is where I bought mine. They are kinda fun little speakers that you can tote around with you everywhere. You can make these speakers a bit bigger by pushing the release on the side so it spreads about 1/4 inch and it reveals the black speaker membrane.Even given the "fun" factor of these speakers, they lack great sound quality. I thought that in their "popped-up" position, the speakers would sound better and they do; just a bit. The sound is very tinny, without much bass.
However, the speakers have a rechargeable battery that charges via a micro USB port. That means you don't always have to be connected to a power supply, and it truly makes these speakers portable and acceptable.

All the negative reviews I'm not understanding this isn't a BOSE home theater it's a single tiny speaker meant to supplement a smartphone, mp3 player or laptop and it does this quite well. I had been listening to music through my smartphone's built-in speaker mostly at night to help me fall asleep. Now, if you have been doing the same you'll know that a phone's built-in speaker is pretty bad. I wanted something just a couple steps above a single portable speaker that would have decent sound clearer sound than my smartphone and the Music Bullet did just that. It's got a very sturdy base, retractable line-in cord, and rechargeable batteries (via USB cable included). Does it sound like a BOSE home theater?? No. But it does the job. The sound is much better than any built-in speaker on any device you might have. It delivers solid, clear sound that's well balanced for its size (which is about 2 inches tall opened). Does it deliver the mega bass it says it does in advertisements? No. When you do expand it to get this extra bass instead you get a more clear tone which was and is fine by me however I did detract one star because of the misleading ads. So many reviewers have given this 1 star because it didn't deliver big booming bass which is quite silly being that the speaker itself is just a little bigger than the size of a quarter. As for price: you can find this at Walmart for $14.88. Anything above that is ridiculous. But, if you want something small, portable and with decent sound for your phone, mp3 player, laptop, etc., this does the job very well.As my wife and I cleared out the christmas decor I stumbled upon these rascals, one black and one red, still packaged and unwrapped. My wife said those were for me but she lost them and didn't know what happened to them. I saw an ad for them on t.v. but was a bit skeptical, until I took one to work. These baby's are pretty darn loud! I took my nook color and laptop to the break room and plug one in after the other to show my co workers and each one was impressed. Though lacking the true stereo experience these music bullets do the trick for me for portable speakers, even the little bass gimmick is nice too. If I have one reservation it's the pricing on this site. This was the only listing I could find for these items. If one was to find them cheaper, I'd definitely suggest getting one.
