Nikon COOLPIX S4100 14 MP Digital Camera (Silver)

  • 4-way VR Image Stabilization System
  • Touch Control 3-inch High Resolution (460,000-dot) Clear Color Display
  • EXPEED C2 for enhanced image quality and processing speed

I purchased this camera as a replacement while on vacation. After less than a month it would not charge. When I contacted customer support I was told I needed a new battery because most likely I had overcharged the camera and should not leave it charging more that 2 hours. I purchased a new battery and it worked ok for 2 months. I removed the memory card to upload photos to my computer and now the Nikon S4100 won't power up again. Not work the trouble to get yet another battery. The Casio Exilm I lost was much, much better.

I have been really happy with this camera. The first one I ordered stopped charging correctly after the first day, but I was able to send it back for a replacement, and my new one has been working great. Sure, the night pictures aren't the best, but you're not going to find much better in a camera in this price range.

The camera turns on very fast which I like, however if you're using flash sometimes you have to wait a bit before you can take the next picture. I also had some trouble with blurry pictures at first, but I discovered the non-hand shake mode and once it was turned on my camera took great pictures.

I really like the simplicity of the buttons, especially the video record button. While it takes a couple seconds to actually start recording, it's fun to just be able to hit the record button to start a video. Some people had problems with the touch screen, but I think it works great. My phone is also a touch screen so I may just be used to how to use them, but I think it is very responsive. Plus, I think the plum color of the actual camera looks really good.

While the camera does have a few time-to-shoot issues (which is why I give it a 4 and not a 5), all in all, I think it's a great, fun camera for this price range.

I love my new camera! I haven't finished reading the user manual because it has so many features. I went to Universal Orlando and everyone was impressed with not only how easy it was to use the camera but how beautiful the colors were. The zoom feature is great. The best part is how large the screen is. It is so slim and I love the stylus that comes with the camera so you can see your pics. The only problem I had was that I didn't purchase a memory card so after 4 pics, I had no memory left and had to purchase a memory card at the park (ouch at the price!!) I would highly recommend this camera to everyone who is looking for an affordable yet high quality, beautiful pics!!

I bought the S4100 3 weeks ago to take on a vacation to europe. It looked small and had a touch screen and the picture quality was ok. I wasn't looking for anything special.

Out of the box the touchscreen seemed unresponsive but once again not a deal breaker. I had a small camera with a solid zoom and decent MegaPixel quality

However, I stand here 3 weeks and day later in Rome with a useless hunk of junk.

First it started with the lens errors. Then the battery became exhausted even though it was showing that I had a full battery. I took pristine care of this camera and made sure that I never charged it too long or let it drop anywhere.

Now the battery won't charge and the camera won't turn on. Absolute lemon and if you don't believe me read through some of these other reviews and you will notice a theme.

Save yourself the time and trouble.

This a nice camera, however I think the Touch screen does not work like it should. It doesn't sense the the touch of finger as well as it should although the camer does take good pictures and the touch screen settings takes a little while to get used to.

This camera was something that I was dying to get. I've had a very old, 8 year old in fact, Coolpix camera that still works but it's so old that I hate using it. The time in between taking one picture and the next if you need the flash is horrendous. So I finally went on the search to revamp my camera owning. And I found the Nikon Coolpix L810.

I have to admit what I really wanted was something close enough to a professional photographers camera. I take pictures everywhere I go. Especially with my son. I also don't buy photographer pictures, I tend to do them myself and they always turn out really well. But I wanted a camera that could take that even further. When I read that this camera could take pictures that were professional grade I was pretty sold. Not to mention that it came in colors. I love color choices! It just makes everything a little bit more fun.

Upon recieving it, I read the manual and figured out how to use it. It takes a little time to figure out exactly how to. Because you don't just go clicking away like most cameras. You hold the capture button half way down. There is a small square on the screen that will turn green when your camera is properly focused. That is when you press the capture button down completely to capture a picture that is not blurred. You can 'snap snap' but sometimes you will get blurry pictures because the camera takes pictures so fast if you don't focus you will get blur.

It doesn't have any problems with the lens cap. If you forget to take it off a message on the screen informs you to turn off your camera, take the lens cap off, and try again. Which was nice because I have heard of people ruining their motor because they left their lens cap on. There are two places to zoom on the camera depending on how you hold it. On the top and on the side, which is really handy. It does take video though I haven't tried that yet.

I was also worried about the size of the pictures. How much room they would take up on a memory card. I bought a 16GB card and haven't had to stop taking pictures yet. In fact, I went to the zoo took over 80 pictures and still only came to 300mb. So I am extremely pleased with that as well. I have already recommended it to a friend that is interested in a nicer camera.

Definatly worth the purchase.

True story: Had my heart set on the Nikon D3100, but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for it. Rewind to my son's 8th grade graduation in May. I didn't have a camera at the time so I was using my cell phone which ran out of batteries by the time the graduation procession started. I was devastated. FORTUNATELY a good friend whose son was also graduating was sitting right behind me and she had a gorgeous professional looking camera. She offered to take pics of our son for me. When she emailed them to me the next day, her pictures were amazing! The zoom, picture color and clarity was so unbelievable! I HAD to know what the name of her camera was. She said a "Nikon Coolpix L810". I quickly looked it up online and found it cheapest on Amazon. I ordered it on a Friday and got it on Monday! I'm in LOVE with this camera. I've been practicing taking photos with it outside my work during breaks and the pictures are just beautiful, the zoom is AMAZING. Now, it's definitely not a quick point and shoot camera. You should ABSOLUTELY read the focus instructions VERY carefully before you use this otherwise your pictures come out blurry. BUT that's not a camera issue, it's a "you're not focusing the camera correctly" issue. Lol. You need to press the button down only halfway to allow the camera to focus first, once the focus light turns green, THEN press it all the way down. Tricky at first but gets easy after about 5 pics. So take your time practicing with the focus and getting to know all its shooting modes and features before you try to use it for special occasions like graduations, weddings, vacations...etc. After you get used to it, you will be in love with it. The price for the quality of this camera is outstanding. Love the size of it too. Big enough to be taken seriously, but small enough to fit in a purse or bag for travel. Not heavy, but just enough weight to it to give that quality feel. It's perfect!

Comes with: Strap, four AA batteries, USB cable, audio video cable, lens cap and software CD-ROM. Didn't come with a carrying case but no biggie, found one on ebay for about $6 w/free shipping (Ebay item #380422196943)

Okay first of all i love the 26x zoom and second i love the 16.1 mp. I recently went to the zoo and took pictures that were making professional photographers mad because of the clarity and at full zoom. Side by side comparison told me i did the right thing in purchasing this camera. And for those of you that think somethings wrong with the camera just spend some time using all the different scenes and adjustment's this camera has. one more thing i really liked was the ability to just push the video button to record video instead of having to change modes...and it doesn't matter what size sd card you have it will only record 29 min at a time, you can record multiple 29 min video's.... take it as you will.

I was very happy to see this camera finally come out. I have been using it for about a month now and I am very happy. I read a review about the images being out of focus and I simply took the picture again with the flash on or with the camera on a different setting. The application that comes with the camera let you view the pictures with great clarity. I bought and would suggest the following 2 items to go along with the camera:

Nikon CoolPix L810 HDMI Cable HD Video Cable for Nikon CoolPix L810, which lets me hook up to my tv in HDMI or even my computer through HDMI.

and

Energizer CHP4WB4 Recharge Smart AA/AAA Charger with 4 AA NiMH Batteries, along with n extra 4 pack.

Bottom line is I really enjoy this camera.

I'm updating this review to add on more about Nikon. First off Nikon was purchased by Mitsubishi a couple of years ago and that company is controlling production your really only getting the Nikon name. Nikon no longer makes any part of their camera in Japan more or less they sold out their own countrymen the one's that built Nikon's name . A majority of the camera's are now made in China and all of the optic's ( Nikkor lens ) are made in China. So if your thinking your buying a high quality Nikon camera guess again try a Mitsubishi product that's what your really getting. Also I'm keeping the rest of my review to give you the horror story I went through with Nikon USA customer service and consumer relations department. Ironic they call it Nikon USA because no part of the camera's are made here either. All I can say is good luck getting them to fix or actually repair anything! If you send it to them be prepared to be lied too, that is all they did to me!

I originally gave this a good review, but I can no longer do that due to the fact Nikon does not stand behind their warranty. I purchased this camera 6 months ago and only used it for about 3 months. The first snowfall I took the camera to the park and took several pictures and then the camera powered off stating " remove lens cap cover " I had that off an repowered the camera and it took about 2 more pictures and then quit. After I got home I tried new batteries and nothing and I also let the camera warm to room temperature and nothing again. I contacted Nikon customer service they told me to send it to their repair facility. I did and recieved and invoice for no charge to repair the camera as it was under warranty.

About 2 weeks later I recieved the camera with an invoice stating " camera unrepairable due to impact damage not economical to repair " I contacted Nikon customer service and they said there was nothing they could do. I asked for a supervisor and he said he would try to come up with an answer for me. I explained to him the camera quit working while I was taking pictures and there was no impact. If Nikon can't fix it they should replace it. He did not sound positive about anything being done, in fact they sent me a e-mail stating severe impact damage. What a bunch of bs as the camera looks brand new! More or less they have this camera made in China very cheaply and if it breaks it's on you! I've had camera's for 30 years and never had to send one back until now and Nikon doen't stand behind their products.

I also have a friend who is an evidence tech at a police department and thier Nikon dslr did the same thing Nikon told them it was impact damage and they were out a camera too. Nikon should be ashamed of selling cheaply made products from china and not standing behind their products. Well this is what happens when a company from Japan sells products made in China to us here in the US....agghhh!

Let me start by saying I have been waiting for this camera since early February. And waiting and waiting long after it was supposed to be released February 15th. Today I finally got mine! (obviously only having it for a few hours won't allow me to give the best review but I would like to point out some of the things I have noticed)

I am an avid camera collector and Nikon fan, taking classes in high school and college (and the last thing I needed was yet another camera) but I was unhappy with my options. My DSLR took fantastic pictures but was too heavy to carry around for everyday use and my basic point and shoot was the perfect pocket size, but took less than decent pictures. I was hoping a bridge camera would solve all of my problems.

Pros so far:

Camera powers on very quickly.

Its surprisingly light and compact without sacrificing amazing picture quality.

The camera body has a nice grip on it so it's easy to hold on to and stays in your hand.

The pop out screen makes it oh so easy to see pictures you're taking at weird angles.

Easy to use (especially for those people who aren't comfortable with adjusting ISO and shutter speed manually but can be adjusted for those who are)

Has tons of settings (hard to say forsure but seems like it performs well in low light situations)

The zoom is INCREDIBLE (I can take a picture of a lego mini figure from 20 feet away with better clarity and image quality than I could right in front of the object with my point and shoot)

The downsides I have noticed so far:

-Video is alright, when I blow it up on my computer it doesn't look to be true HD quality but it's good. Also the zoom on the video can be heard no matter what which is a little annoying.

-The zoom on the actual camera is very slow if you're extending it the full range and it takes a few seconds to focus.

Battery life is not that good would definitely recommend getting a back up!

Overall I LOVE this camera. Sure you may find a Canon or Olympus that has slightly better reviews in one feature or another, but let's be real, no camera has it all. However, in my opinion so far this comes pretty close!

I have put together a slide show on the capabilities of the P510. It can be a telescope, as well as a macro camera as you can see in the video. By far the most versatile camera I have ever owned. It is an upgrade to my Nikon P90, and it is amazing.

The pictures of the moon and Venus were done on a tripod, but can you think of another point and shoot camera that can see Venus in its crescent phase? Incredible. And no sacrifice in macro mode as well. I have taken action shots in soccer from across the field with no vibration issues. I can't say enough about this camera! You can use it in action situations, for wildlife at a distance as well as amateur astronomy.

Please note that windows moviemaker reduced resolution to 640x480 on the video use it to gauge its versatility, not its resolution. The pictures are very sharp!

This is the perfect compromise camera for me. I gave up my DSLR to my daughter who is a serious photographer. It was a great camera but more than I needed. This is light, full of features and takes great pictures.

I've heard concerns about Nikon's battery life, but so far I've had tons of pictures and video off a single charge.

The picture quality looks terrific.

The zoom is amazing.

I usually don't care as much about these things, but the red color is great.

I doubt I'll ever use the GPS feature. It is usually pretty obvious where I am when taking pictures.

I highly recommend these extras. For $500 total you get an nice bundle.

1. The 2 extra batteries plus the wall charger will be very handy -2 Pack Battery And Charger Kit For Nikon P100 P500 P510 Digital Camera Includes 2 Extended (1100 Mah) Replacement Nikon EN-EL5 Batteries + AC/DC Rapid Charger + LCD Screen Protectors + ButterflyPhoto MicroFiber Cleaning Cloth $19.95

2. This bag is the perfect size for the camera, extra batteries and charger -Case Logic DCB-304 High/Fixed Zoom Camera Case (Black) $15.28

3. I'd get two memory cards. They have more space than you'll probably ever use. Each holds over 3,400 pictures, but if you take videos you'll have plenty of room and of course you want a backup. -Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 10 Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC10E $14.98

I have had the Nikon P510 for a week now and have been comparing it to a Panasonic FZ150 that I am also testing.

The P510 is a very nice looking camera that has a quality look and feel. It has a nice textured rubberized material on the hand grip and it has a solid feel.

The camera powers on quickly. I took both indoor and outdoor pictures and I was happy with the results. The shot to shot speed is slower than the FZ150 and overall it does not feel as fast or snappy as the FZ150 in everyday use.

The 42X zoom is incredible but it was slow to focus, or would not focus at all sometimes with the zoom at it's outer reaches.

Overall I slightly preferred the picture quality on the FZ150 and had more keepers with the FZ150 due to its faster and more accurate auto focus. But if I wasn't doing a side by side comparison I would be happy with the picture quality on the Nikon.

The biggest problem I have with the P510 is it's video performance. The actual video image quality is excellent. In fact the low light video quality is impressive and considerably better than the FZ150. There are, however, three big problems.

1)Inability to focus at extended zoom range. After you zoom about two thirds of the range it is unable to auto focus. So while it has an incredible 42X zoom, it is not usable with video. And it's not like you know when it will loose focus so you just end up with a video scene that suddenly turns blurry as you zoom.

2)It refocuses every time you touch the zoom control. Even if you just slightly zoom, the camera looses focus for about one second before locking in again. You end up with a video clip that has multiple one second blurry segments intermixed within an otherwise clear video.

3)The sound of the lens zooming is picked up while recording. This is not just heard during very quiet scenes, it is heard all the time. I was surprised how loud it was when playing back a video.

If video performance is not important to you, the Nikon is a really nice camera. I am looking for a camera does well at both photos and video and therefore will be returning this camera.

I bought both the Nikon p510 camera and the Sony hx200v camera to see which I prefer. I took numerous pictures with both, but decided to keep the Nikon p510. Although both cameras took very nice pictures, I liked the way that people shots came out with the Nikon p510, especially indoors. The Nikon p510 seems to give a nice "matte" finish to skin shots and with a bit more color, whereas the Sony hx200v showed/emphasized more skin flaws. Also, indoor pics with the Sony were inconsistent sometimes too yellow, and other times too white (overexposed). Although the Sony hx200v does have a "soft skin" setting, I felt it looked too unnatural (gave the skin too much of a porcelain doll finish). Also, the Nikon p510 seems to handle indoor pics better where there is a lot of backlight. Outdoor pics are nice with both cameras, but again I preferred the people pics with the Nikon p510 (the outdoor people pics taken with the Sony were more neutral toned). The only reason I give this review 4 stars is because the zoom can be a bit flaky when trying to focus with maximum zoom, in particular on small objects such as birds; sometimes it would focus right away, but a lot of times I had to keep adjusting the zoom before it decided to focus. Yet, I haven't had this problem with other types of pictures.

4/22/12 update: I think I found the solution to the problem I had with zooming on small objects. Pg 72 of the disc manual ("Using Focus Modes") talks about how to change focus modes. It seems that when I change the focus to "infinity", it focuses on the subject a lot quicker. I'm still going to play with this setting a bit more, but so far it seems to have helped. Also, after reading page 73 ("Available Focus Modes"), it looks like "manual focus" may also be helpful on zooming in on small objects. I will play with these settings for a while. If I find these settings consistently work, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

I wanted to love this camera based on the other reviews, but it came up short for me. Because I do a lot of high-resolution scrapbooks and greeting cards featuring my kids, I needed a camera that could outshine the 8MP camera on my iPhone (and let's face it, the iPhone's zoom feature is a joke). 16MP was more than enough, and the pictures came out beautiful, but there's a fatal flaw on this camera I just can't ignore:

It's useless for children. My toddlers move -fast-, and the shutter speed on this camera is absolutely appalling. By the time the camera is able to capture the shot, the moment is completely lost and gone, and that's 50% of the reason I wanted a new camera (the MP resolution being the other 50%). At least now I know when I go to buy a different camera to watch for this feature. I find it incredible that my phone captures photos more instantaneously than a Nikon.

If all you take is still shots, this may be the camera for you. I was impressed with the photo quality, the make of the camera, the ease of use, and the controls. The zoom feature is great but again, much too slow to capture the nanosecond of time children are stationary. The 3" LCD is also very good quality and the auto-focus works very well. The auto scene settings are really all you need to create great photos.

All in all, this is a good, but not a great buy. I can't overlook the Achilles' heel of the ultra-slow shutter, but I would recommend this for someone who only needs still or landscape portraiture.

UPDATE 4/5/12: after returning this camera (thanks Amazon), I purchased the Panasonic DMC25K. Although about $35.00 separates these cameras, I was more than satisfied with my new purchase. The Panasonic's shutter speed, controls, and scene modes are far superior for such a small price difference. If you're shopping around with a little flexibility in price, I can't recommend the Panasonic DMC25K enough over this Nikon.

When buying electronics on the internet you never really know what you're getting; sure the details of the device sound impressive but are they really, and is it the best deal possible with the constant progress in technology? (Hopefully this review will answer those questions.)

The Nikon Coolpix L26 is simply an excellent camera for an excellent price. 16 mega pixels make the photo clear and crisp; good for landscapes, amateur photography, and candid photos. The 5x Zoom is adequate and suits the camera very well. Best of all, the camera is very easy to use and because its battery operated all you need to do is insert the batteries and a memory card and you're good to go.

In conclusion if you want a good camera for a low price that's pretty idiot proof this is the one for you and apparently is for me as well.

Received this camera about a month ago, and even though it is a point and shoot camera, there are a lot of options to learn, so I am taking the time to do just that! I actually read the instructions (downnloaded the PDF manual)and fleshing it out...the 3" screen was the main draw to this camera, as was the price-under $120.00, and the simple controls that sit just right of the screen....also the fact I can use regular AA batteries and/or rechargeable...comes in 3 choices of finish-red, black or silver. Good documentation available...Nice camera for the price!

I truly deeply LOVE this camera; it is sooo easy to use and the quality is there. It even lets you select the final size of your photos in pixels. Uploading pictures is a PLEASURE, NOTHING COMPLICATED IN USING IT, unlike other digitals. It is truly a point and shoot camera! I take photos of fast moving puppies and it keeps up with them, no blurs! I recommend it to all! The price was more than worth it without having to spend thousand(s) of dollars. It is meant for the amateur photographer and is simply an absolute VERY TRUE JOY to use! I can't say enough about this VERY excellent camera. Wish I had had it years ago, but maybe it would not be the excellent camera it is today! This is the VERY best digital camera I have ever used and meets all my needed requirements, especially for the puppies in picture taking! It replaces the KODAK cameras I have used over the last 11 years with Kodak now going out of business in this area anyway. I recommend it to all amateurs, well worth the money which is not that much.

What a great little camera. Point and shoot and the picture quality is fantastic. Large view field for those needing glasses. I love it
